Introduction to Biostatistics

This course is the first from the Erasmus MC modules on statistics. It is a precursory course before the R course (module II), survival analysis course (module III) and the course on prediction models (module IV).

This course introduces the fundamental concepts of biostatistics for medical research, providing an understanding of the basic theory through integration with practical applications from clinical studies.

You will learn essential statistical concepts, statistical tests and analyses techniques relevant to your medical research. We will teach you how to use statistical software to perform analyses and how to report these. Additionally, you will obtain skills to help conduct responsible science and critically read study protocols and published papers.

Objectives

After completing of the course, you will be able to:

     •Understand the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics;

     •Understand the basics of hypothesis testing and p-values;

     •Be familiar with the most important statistical tests for comparing groups and regression analysis such as chi-square, t-test, linear and logistic regression;

     •Understand the underlying assumptions and limitations of these techniques;

     •Perform straightforward sample size calculations;

     •Be able to perform basic statistical analysis, predominantly in SPSS, and interpret the results.

Participant profile

The course targets a wide range of participants, including PhD students at the beginning of their trajectory with little to no knowledge in biostatistics.
